Bay Area Meals on Wheels

We deliver meals to the Bay Area homebound from Monday through Friday

Our mission

Bay Area Meals on Wheels is an all-volunteer organization, chartered in 1982 under the Texas Non-Profit Corporation Act, with an approved tax-exempt status from the Internal Revenue Service.  We do not receive funding from the United Way.

Since 1982, we've delivered over 12,000 hot meals and 3200 sack lunches each year to an average of 65 shut-in and/or medically dependent clients per day, or nearly 315,000 hot meals in more than 26 years, thanks solely to financial contributions from the local community and the dedicated volunteers who run the entire program from a Board of Directors to volunteer drivers.

Our accomplishments in 2008

o        Bay Area Meals on Wheels delivered approximately 13,800 hot meals and 4,200 sack lunches to an average of about 66 clients per day during the year.

o        Our volunteers number around 150, 70 regularly scheduled drivers, 10 meal coordinators, and 70 substitutes (on call to serve at any time).

o        We sometimes find people needing immediate attention to for a health situation during meal deliveries. Our drivers may be the only people who check daily on the relative health of clients.

o        All referrals are prescreened by phone and then an in-home interview is then conducted to determine if our program suits their needs. About 85% of client referrals are accepted; some are not qualified; some make other arrangements.
